Two women who worked for others, then decided to own
their own business have made a go of it the plastic industry in
Marietta. The company Polymer services was established in
december of 1998 by shari Brown and Billie McClelland who
came to the realization about 10 years ago that they wanted
to own their own business and stop working for someone else.
Located just south of downtown Marietta, Polymer Services is a
toll processing company with eight employees. Toll processing
consists of taking a virgin material that has a problem (moisture,
metal, black specs or other contamination) and cleaning it up to
be sold from the original manufacturer as top quality. Without
toll processing, the plastics manufacturers would have to send
the material to a landfill or sell it off as a company loss.
Brown's interest in the plastic industry started early, as her
father was employed with a local plastics manufacturing
industry for 35 years. After a short term at a plastics industry
in mid-life, she decided she wanted to own her own business
and enlisted the help of Billie McClelland to join her in a
business venture.
Although the two former stay-at-home moms seemed like
unlikely entrepreneurs, the two have worked hard and now
sales for 2007 and 2008 total more than $1 million. "now, 10
years later we are providing top quality services, optical sorting,
drying, screening, metal detection and removal, blending,
bagging, miscellaneous packaging and shipping to our local
plastic manufacturing companies," Brown said.
